Over the years I’ve found the best way to find your bearings in Manchester (and fill your belly…) is to explore the city via restaurant hopping!

Regardless of whether you’re vegan, gluten free, or on any other special diet – there’s some amazing healthy food here for you. Manchester is blessed with some great foodie spots, so go on a culinary adventure!  Discover your new favourite brunch/lunch/dinner destination below:

1) Kettlebell Kitchen – Ancoats

Located just into Ancoats, an up and coming neighbourhood  in the north east of the city popular with young professionals, Kettlebell Kitchen was build from the ground up as the ultimate location nutritious meals for the health conscious. Their “Kettlebox” is our go-to post-gym fix; it’s perfect for grabbing great food on the go. This place is redefining fast food as we know it.

2) Wahu –  Spinningfields

In the heart of Spinningfields, Wahu is the perfect lunchtime destination for anyone who finds themselves near Deansgate and is hungry for something light & fresh. Offering wraps and lunch boxes (both comprised of a protein source and a bevy of veggies) it’s the perfect pick me up for anyone who finds themselves flagging in the middle of a busy day. Despite it’s location in the centre of one of the most expensive areas of Manchester, Wahu offers great food at prices that won’t break the bank. It’s a win-win if you ask us.

Another place serving healthy grub on the fly, Bosu is located in Didsbury, one of the trendiest suburbs in the south of Manchester. Bosu is especially good at catering for various different diets such as weight loss, muscle gain, and gluten free. Everything is made totally fresh and arrives highly instagramable – so you can impress you friends who couldn’t make it for lunch. Bosu are so convinced you’ll love their food, they even do meal prep plans so you can have it for every meal of the day!

4) Rudy’s – Ancoats

A recent addition to Ancoats (formerly called ‘Little Italy’!), this Neopolitan style pizzeria has quickly become a firm favourite. Let’s be honest – pizza is never going to be the healthiest option, but there’s no reason you have to put up with the garbage additives you find in pizzas from massive chain stores when you can tuck into something fresh and nutritious – just the way the Italians intended. They may not have the largest menu in the world, but when you’re focussed on quality rather than quantity, who cares?

Vegan & gluten free options?: Vegan yes, gluten no.

5) Vnam – NoMa/Ancoats

Vnam is the definition of a hidden treasure: on the outskirts of 2 rising neighbourhoods (Ancoats and NoMa), it doesn’t look like much from the outside. But from the moment you step through the door, you immediately understand why The Guardian listed it as one of their favourite restaurants in Manchester. Gorgeous, fresh Vietnamese food is served in a cosy setting. Let the spicy food and homely vibes whisk you away from a dreary Manchester night.

Hands down one of my favourite brunch destinations, Erza & Gil is the place for healthy breakfast food in the trendy Northern Quarter. We’ve mentioned them before, and for good reason – between the amazing salads, great brunch favourites and the delicious banana bread (my personal favourite), you really need look no further than here for treating yourself to some top drawer breakfast.

This Northern Quarter cafe was recently voted the best Vegan restaurant in the UK, a title it totally deserves. Any illusion that all vegan food is boring or bland will be dispelled after just one visit to this mecca of ethically sourced food, and punk rock (oh yes, this place comes with a twist!). This place goes all in on vegan junk food, from burgers to nachos, V Rev is the place to come and indulge guilt free – ethically and healthily! They’ve recently moved to a bigger and better home – so go check them out.

Vegan & gluten free options?: It’s all vegan! Gluten free options also available.

8) Fuel Cafe – Withington

Head to south Manchester to find this gem. Popular with students thanks to its reasonably priced vegetarian and vegan menu, this café has a big emphasis on music. A special highlight is the “Full Veggie”,  a full english-style breakfast behemoth that’s sure to satisfy to the hungriest of carnivores, as well as their ‘fish finger’ buttie which replaces the fish with breaded halloumi for a twist on a childhood classic. Trust me when I say that this place is worth travelling to.

This is a one stop shop for everything and anything healthy in Manchester. Located on Oxford road, just south of the city centre this place is a store packed with organic and fairtrade foods, and fantastic cafe all in one. If you’re into healthy and fitness and you’ve not visited here, you’re in for a treat. Tuck into one of their curries or stews on a cold winter day to achieve maximum cosiness – the recipes have been handed down for the last 40 years, and the endless refinement shows.
